Everyone wants to pick the perfect time of year in Kentucky and Indiana for outdoor senior portraits! You know, those 2 days where it’s not excruciatingly hot or humid, pouring rain or where we have freak snow storms?
It’s a good idea to schedule your senior portraits at the beginning of your senior year for a few reasons:
- Get first pick of available dates
- Start planning the perfect outfits and locations
- Check one thing off your list before senior year officially starts
But which month is the BEST month to take your senior pictures?!?
In my experience, we can find beautiful outdoor locations for senior portraits ANY time of year, if you know where to look. Thankfully, I’ve been keeping a list of locations that are in bloom every month of the year!
The two most popular requests for outdoor senior portraits in Southern Indiana and Kentucky are for fall leaves and wildflowers, so let’s talk about those first!
Best months of fall foliage for outdoor senior portraits in Southern Indiana and Kentucky: Late October – mid-November
We LOVE a good fall outfit and the red, orange, and yellow leaves in the background for senior portraits. Most people want pictures in September/October, but I’ve found that the BEST fall foliage is actually in the last two weeks of October and the first two weeks of November for the best color.

Best months for tall, grassy fields with muted tones and evergreens: Late November – February
We’ve had mild winters in the last few years, and I’ve still found some beautiful dried grassy areas that have been beautiful for portraits, even this late in the year. I also know of several locations with evergreen trees, shrubs, and ivy that are still green in the wintertime!
Best time of year for snowy portraits: January – March
Want a truly unique senior session? How about a snowy senior portrait? This one is very dependent on the weather forecast, but I typically have more availability during this time of year if you love the snow!
Best months for colorful spring flowers: March – May
Springtime is another favorite for senior portraits! I’ve been keeping a list of local trees that start blooming earlier in the spring with beautiful flowers. We can find magnolia trees, cherry blossoms, and colorful azalea bushes. This time of year books quickly, it’s best to schedule at least 2-3 months in advance for first pick of dates!
Best months for wildflower senior portraits: Late May – June
Fields of wildflowers EVERYWHERE! Marigolds, poppies, and the best chance of sunny weather. This is also a popular request, if you are going to be a senior this fall and you want tons of wildflowers, schedule a summer session!
Best months for sunflower senior pictures and tall, green grass: August – September
In early August, the sunflower fields are in full bloom and these are absolutely amazing to take pictures in! These dates are limited because of the lifespan of the sunflowers before the heat gets them. If you want your senior pictures done in a sunflower field, message me soon so we can start planning!
August and September are great months for senior pictures because the grass is beautifully lush and there are still plenty of wildflowers around!
We are so lucky that any month of the year here in Kentucky and Indiana has a ton of possibilities for outdoor senior portraits. If one of these ideas really stands out to you, let’s start planning your senior portrait session!
